February towable report

Retail sales of towable RVs rose 4.4% in February over February 2010, Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) has reported.

Bad weather likely held down sales during the month, SSI noted, as it did earlier in the February motorized report, and a greater sales increase had been expected.

Nevertheless, it was a healthy, across-the-board increase for three of the four segments counted — travel trailers, fifth-wheels, folding camping trailers and park models.

The February gain brought retail dales year-to-date to 9.8% ahead of the 2010 pace.

By segment sales in February, compared with February 2010 were as follows:

  • Travel trailer sales rose 5.7%.
  • Fifth-wheel sales were up 2.8%.
  • Folding camping trailer sales increased 12%.
  • Park model sales fell 33.3%.

Thor Industries Inc. remained the overall towable leader with a 38.7% market share in February. Forest River Inc. owned a 20.3% share and Jayco Inc. was third at 10.9%.

Thor led in travel trailers with a 35.1% share and in fifth-wheels with a 55% share. Forest River was the folding camping trailer leader with a 29.3% share. Skyline Corp. moved into the top spot for park models with a 13.6% share.

Year-to-date, Thor continues to lead in overall towable sales with a 38.4% share. Forest River is second with a 20.2% share.

Thor is tops in travel trailers with a 34.5% share. Forest River is second with 21.4%.

Thor holds a commanding 54.1% share in fifth-wheels, with Forest River second at 17%.

Forest River holds the top spot in folding camping trailers with a 29.8% share, while defunct FTCA Inc., makers of the Coleman camping trailer, holds the No. 2 spot with a 25.8% share. Jayco is No. 2 for firms still in business with a 15.9% share.

There is stiff competition in the park model segment with Thor leading at 17.7% for the year, Skyline second at 13.5% and Oak Creek Homes remaining in a close third at 13.2%.

Class B report

Class B report

Retail sales of Class B motorhomes or camper vans fell 44.3% in February compared to February 2010, Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) has reported.

But like the earlier report for Class A and Class C sales, SSI said factors such as bad weather kept the sales figure below expectations.

“It is our opinion that the decline in February was due more to the weather conditions rather than the market demand,” SSI noted in an explanatory note. “The first quarter number should provide a more complete picture of the retail demand.”

Roadtrek Motorhomes Inc. retained its commanding hold on Class B sales with a 51.5% market share in February, SSI reported. Fellow Canadian builder Pleasure-Way Industries Ltd. was runnerup with a 22.1% share.

Thor Industries Inc. was the top U.S. Class B builder with a 14.7% market share for February.

After year-over-year declines in January, year-to-date Class B sales are off the 2010 pace by 49.4%.

February motorized report

February motorized report

Retail sales of motorized RVs dipped 15.2% in February compared to February 2010, Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI) has reported, but SSI noted that unusual factors likely kept the actual sales figures below expectations.

The February sales total was lower than January’s and is explained by storms on both coasts and the Midwest, SSI said..

“It is our opinion that the decline in February was due more to the weather conditions rather than the market demand,” SSI noted in an explanatory note. “The first quarter number should provide a more complete picture of the retail demand.”

That being said, SSI reported Class A sales were down 11.4%, while Class C sales were off 21.3%.

Winnebago Industries Inc. was the overall leader with a 22% market share, followed by Thor Industries Inc. with a 14.9% share.

Winnebago led in Class A sales with a 21.4% share, just topping Tiffin Motorhomes Inc. with a 21.1% share.

Winnebago led in Class C sales with a 23.2% share, followed by Forest River Inc. with a 19.4% share. Forest River’s Coachmen division was third with a 16.7% share.
