RV magazine's summer issue

RV magazine, a three-year-old quarterly newsstand publication from Source Interlink Media, Tampa, Fla., recently redesigned its website ( to make it more user-friendly for its RV consumer readership.

”The website is pretty true to the spirit and content of the magazine with a few web-exclusive stories,” said Jeff Dahlin, Interlink Truck Group publisher, who oversees El Segundo, Calif.-based RV magazine. ”We have to be careful about how much ‘print’ we put up there because we want them to buy the magazine.”

RV magazine, with a retail price of $5.99, prints about 100,000 magazines a quarter with newsstand ”sell-through” of about 30,000 copies at retailers such as Walmart, Safeway and Barnes & Noble

It is written by about a dozen freelancers and focuses on Baby Boomers and Gen-X readers.

The magazine publishes either 64 or 72 pages on cover-quality high-gloss stock with ”a big emphasis on toys that can be carried in RVs” and stories on RV travel and activities such as fishing and hiking,” Dahlin said.

”Our mission is to breathe some fresher, younger life into the RV segment,” said Dahlin, who also is publisher of Diesel Power, 8-Lug and Truckin’ magazines.

Dahlin described as ”challenging” RV magazine‘s inaugural issue in 2008. ”Initially, we were rebuffed by the RV industry,” he said. ”We were told that they didn’t need another RV magazine and that they didn’t have any money to advertise.

”But our first issue was the top-selling consumer magazine on newsstands, a title we think we still hold. Other magazines have higher circulation but we don’t sell subscriptions.”

The website includes RVers blogs, community forums and product reviews. Currently, the site features reviews of Monaco RV LLC’s Class A lineup and Tiffin Motor Home Inc.’s Allegro Breeze diesel pusher, along with technical articles and videos on protecting against electrical surges, changing oil and fluids and battery maintenance.

Source Interlink traces it roots back to Peterson Publications in the 1970s and is the publisher of more than 70 enthusiast-oriented magazines and associated websites, including Motor Trend, Hot Rod, Two Wheel and Low Rider.
